No gorilla or person has ever lost significant weight without doing resistance training on this one particular muscle. It does not require special equipment, can be done any time of day, takes less than a minute of your time and does not cost a penny. Do you have any idea what muscle I am referring to that requires resistance training?
It’s the willpower muscle. Willpower is the ability to resist short-term temptations in order to meet long term goals. Losing weight requires significant willpower and determination. Here are three things you can practice to incrementally improve your willpower.
- Begin to believe you have an unlimited supply of willpower. Simply adopt the notion that your willpower will never run out. Those who believe in unlimited willpower lose more weight than those who feel like it runs out every day.
- Have a long term goal and a specific plan on how to lose weight for life. If you know where you are going, there is a better chance you will reach the destination.
- Have an emergency list of activities and rewards that can divert you from a willpower crisis. These activities should not include eating rewards or spending rewards. Pick things that are easy to do, fun, educational, rewarding or productive. They could include things that burn calories or make you feel good about yourself. Examples might be taking a walk, reading a book, going to a movie, getting a massage, chewing gum, cleaning out a closet, washing your car, calling a friend or doing an act of kindness. Anything that would divert you from the temptation you are having.
The more you resist temptation, the stronger your resistance muscle will get. The 800 pound gorilla in the room is now down to 750 pounds. The power of believing in abundant, never ending willpower is something you might want to monkey around with if you are determined to be skinny and debt free.
