Being Skinny and Debt Free is Possible on the Twinkie Diet

twinkieYes, many of our dreams have finally come true; you can get thin on Twinkies!  Honest!

It is not only possible, it has happened.  A college professor from Kansas State University ate a Twinkie every 3 hours for 10 weeks and lost 27 pounds.

The bottom line is he ate about 1800 calories a day, instead of 2400 calories a day, the maintenance calories for a man his size.

Here are his results after 10 weeks:

His BMI went from 28.8 to 24.9. His LDL dropped 20% and his HDL went up 20%. His triglycerides dropped almost 40%, and his body fat went from 33% to 24%, very good results, indeed.

Even though this man lost weight, I do not think he, or anyone else, would ever recommend being on the Twinkie diet or anything resembling.  It was a short term experiment only.

There are 6 things I took away from the Twinkie experiment:

  1. If you eat fewer calories than your body needs, you will lose weight.
  2. If you want to have a Twinkie, a Ding Dong, a Little Debbie, or any other food in moderation, you will lose weight if you consume less than your daily calorie maintenance level.
  3. Everyone should know what their daily calorie maintenance level is by journaling their food, or using an app like Myfitnesspal (at least for a while).
  4. It is best to lose weight slowly over time while building new healthy habits and behavior you can live with for a lifetime.
  5. The Net Calorie rules, period, end of story, so eat just a little less, and exercise just a little more.
  6.  Don’t get addicted to Twinkies!
