Debt and Obesity Start Early in Life

125162969If you follow our blog, you know that obesity and debt start when people ignore impulses in their brain.  It says stop eating or spending and you completely ignore it. When does that develop? Like many other facets of adult life, you learned these detrimental habits early in life.

A recent study by the New England Journal of Medicine showed that children who are overweight by age five are highly likely to remain overweight as teenagers and adults. Parents must be mindful of eating habits they are teaching their children.

Cooking at home can be difficult to do with children running around, but the long term damage of fast food can have a lasting impact on their life. These practices are teaching children that food should be instantaneous and taste good but nutritional value is not important.

Poor money management begins at a later age. Many young people are given everything they want in life without having to work. Parents aren’t doing them any favors. These children are being conditioned for instant gratification. Saving money takes time and it makes sense that it should start at a young age.

There are very few budgeting and financial management classes offered in high schools. We learn all of our spending habits from our parents and home life.

By the time our youth become adults, many of them have formed poor lifestyle habits. It’s much more difficult to break a bad habit than to begin life with healthy ones. Take time to consider the impact of your choices on your children.
